What travelers actually save, in seven cities

Every place below came out of a TikTok, an Instagram Reel or a YouTube video that someone shared into Plotline. Each city opens with what our travelers save there most, counted by how many separate people saved each place, then the three-day plan those saves turn into.

Asia is where our data is deepest. Tokyo alone has more saves than every European city we track put together, which makes the smaller cities on this page useful as a contrast rather than a ranking.

Tokyo

12,294 travelers, 613,855 saves, 22,134 distinct places. Tokyo is our most-saved city by a wide margin.

The top five are Sensō-ji (4,292 savers), Shibuya Crossing (3,929), the Tsukiji Outer Market (3,874), Shibuya Sky (3,644) and Meiji Jingu (3,500). A temple, a road junction, a fish market, an observation deck and a shrine, all within 800 savers of each other.

Day 1. Meiji Shrine early, while the forest path is still empty. Harajuku after, then ramen at Fuunji. Shibuya Crossing and Shibuya Sky in the afternoon, booked ahead for a sunset slot. Shimokitazawa for vintage shops late, then Golden Gai and Omoide Yokocho at night, where the bars seat six people each.

Day 2. Sensō-ji in Asakusa first thing. Brunch at Pelican Cafe, then Akihabara and Yanaka, which is the old low-rise Tokyo that survived the war. TeamLab Planets in the late afternoon on a pre-booked ticket. Ichiran for dinner.

Day 3. Tsukiji Outer Market at opening for tamagoyaki and uni. Ginza in the morning, then Nakameguro or Daikanyama in the afternoon. Kamakura is an hour away if you would rather leave the city. Roppongi Hills for the last night.

Get a Suica card on arrival and put it in Apple Wallet. Almost everything takes it, including most convenience stores.

Seoul

2,093 travelers, 73,826 saves, 8,196 places.

Seoul is one of two cities on this page where shop is the most-saved category, ahead of explore. Bukchon Hanok Village leads at 567 savers, then Gyeongbokgung Palace (548), Hongdae Street (526), Gwangjang Market (523) and N Seoul Tower (509). Five places inside sixty savers of each other, about a tenth of the leader's count, which is the tightest spread in this series.

Day 1. Gyeongbokgung at opening, and wear a hanbok if you want free entry. Bukchon Hanok Village after, which is a residential neighborhood, so keep the noise down. Samgyetang for lunch at Tosokchon, Insadong in the afternoon, Myeongdong late, Korean BBQ at night.

Day 2. Hongdae in the morning, brunch at Cafe Onion, then Hannam-dong. N Seoul Tower in the late afternoon for the view down over the city. Gwangjang Market in the evening for bindaetteok and raw beef, then drinks in Itaewon.

Day 3. Noryangjin Fish Market early, or the DMZ if you booked a tour. Seongsu-dong in the afternoon, which is the warehouse district turned café district. Dongdaemun at night, because it is open when nothing else is.

Bangkok

901 travelers, 20,960 saves, 4,529 places.

The other shop-led city, and the only one where a mall takes the top spot: ICONSIAM at 252 savers, ahead of Wat Arun (221), Chatuchak Weekend Market (195), Yaowarat (170) and Wat Pho (158).

Day 1. Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew early, with covered shoulders and knees. Wat Pho after for the reclining Buddha. Cross to Wat Arun, then the Chao Phraya in the afternoon. Yaowarat in the evening, when Chinatown's street kitchens come out.

Day 2. Floating market day trip early, then Or Tor Kor Market for lunch. Chatuchak if it is a weekend, Jim Thompson House if it is not. ICONSIAM late afternoon, rooftop bar at night.

Day 3. Maeklong Railway Market, where the awnings fold back as the train passes through. Jay Fai for lunch if you can get in. Ari in the afternoon, Wat Paknam or a Thai massage late.

Bali

802 travelers, 20,171 saves, 3,619 places.

Tegallalang Rice Terrace leads at 194 savers, then Uluwatu Temple (167), Kelingking Beach and Malini Uluwatu at 141 each, and Cretya Ubud (131). Bali is the only place on this page where vibe, our category for viewpoints and scenery, reaches the top three, though only just.

Day 1. Ubud. Tegallalang early, before the tour buses and while the light is still low. Tirta Empul after, then lunch at Hujan Locale. Monkey Forest in the afternoon, Ubud Art Market late.

Day 2. Canggu. Batu Bolong Beach in the morning, brunch at Shady Shack, Tanah Lot in the afternoon for the temple on the rock. FINNS or La Brisa for sunset, then Canggu for dinner.

Day 3. Uluwatu. The temple in the morning, Suluban Beach after, lunch at Single Fin. Padang Padang in the afternoon, Sundays Beach Club late, Jimbaran Bay for grilled seafood on the sand.

Distances here are longer than they look. Ubud to Uluwatu is well over two hours in traffic, which is why the days are split by region.

Taipei

536 travelers, 7,701 saves, 1,840 places.

Taipei leads with explore. Taipei 101 (125 savers) and Raohe Night Market (122) are almost level, then Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (109), Ximending (95) and Crispy Milk Donuts (66), with two more night markets, Ningxia and Shilin, just behind.

Day 1. Longshan Temple in the morning, Bopiliao after, Din Tai Fung for lunch. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in the afternoon, Yongkang Street late, Shilin Night Market at night.

Day 2. Jiufen in the morning, the hillside tea town with the lantern-lit staircase. A-Mei Tea House for lunch, Shifen Waterfall and sky lanterns in the afternoon. Raohe Night Market to finish.

Day 3. Elephant Mountain at sunrise for the Taipei 101 shot. Soy milk breakfast, Songshan Cultural Park mid-morning, beef noodle for lunch, then Xinyi and Huashan 1914.

Dubai

131 travelers, 803 saves, 502 places. A smaller sample than the cities above, and the most distinctive result on the page.

Dubai is the only city we track where stay is a top category and where a hotel is the single most-saved place. The Burj Al Arab leads at 22 savers, Atlantis The Royal is second at 15 and the Burj Khalifa third at 11. Everywhere else, hotels are where you sleep. Here they are the attraction.

Day 1. Burj Khalifa at sunrise, which is cheaper and emptier than sunset. Dubai Mall and the fountain after, lunch at Al Ustad Special Kebab, Dubai Frame in the afternoon. Desert safari in the evening.

Day 2. Al Fahidi in the morning, abra across the Creek for one dirham, then the Gold and Spice Souks. Arabian Tea House for lunch, Alserkal Avenue in the afternoon for the galleries, Jumeirah Mosque late.

Day 3. Palm Jumeirah in the morning, Dubai Marina and the JBR Walk in the afternoon, Kite Beach late.

Between June and September the daytime heat makes most of this unworkable outdoors. November to March is the window.

Tashkent

We do not have enough Tashkent saves to publish a ranking. Fewer than ten of our travelers have saved anything there, which tells you something about how little Central Asia shows up in travel content, and nothing reliable about the city.

The itinerary stands on its own.

Day 1. Chorsu Bazaar under the blue dome in the morning, Kukeldash Madrasa after. Plov at the Central Asian Plov Centre, which serves it from cauldrons the size of paddling pools and sells out by early afternoon. Khast Imam Complex in the afternoon.

Day 2. The Tashkent Metro, which is worth riding purely for the stations: chandeliers, mosaics and marble, and photography was banned until 2018. Amir Timur Square after, samsa and shashlik for lunch, then Tashkent City and the Minor Mosque.

Day 3. Samarkand is two hours by high-speed train and is the reason most people come to Uzbekistan. Book the Afrosiyob ahead. Otherwise stay for the Museum of Applied Arts and the Sunday markets.

What seven cities together show

Two things stand out when you line them up.

Shopping outranks sightseeing in Seoul and Bangkok. Not in Tokyo, not in Taipei, not anywhere in Europe. In both cities the saved places are markets and malls before monuments, and in Bangkok a shopping centre is the single most-saved place in the city.

Dubai saves hotels. It is the only city on this page where the top place is somewhere you sleep, and the only one where stay reaches the top three categories. That is a real difference in what the city is for, and the data picked it up on fewer than a thousand saves.

Tokyo's scale is the other story. 22,134 distinct places is more than six times Bali and more than fifty times Ljubljana, and the top five sit within 800 savers of each other, so there is no single answer to what people go to Tokyo for.

Methodology

Save counts are distinct Plotline travelers who saved each place, as of August 20, 2026. They leave out places a traveler turned down or never confirmed when importing a post, the sample places offered to new users during onboarding, places added by Plotline's AI trip planner, and Plotline's own accounts. An earlier version of this post counted all of those, which inflated the figures across this series, most of all in New York, Mexico City and London; it was corrected on October 7, 2026. Places are merged by name within a metro area, and comparisons are made within a city rather than across them. We use metro area rather than city, because Google returns ward names that fragment Tokyo across six rows. Rows where the saved "place" is the city itself, plus Ubud and Penida Island in Bali, and one booking platform that appeared as a place in Taipei, were removed by hand from the rankings and category counts. Dubai carries fewer than 200 savers and is labelled where it appears; Tashkent has too few to report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most-saved city on Plotline?

Tokyo, by a wide margin. 12,294 travelers have saved 613,855 places there across 22,134 distinct locations, which is more saves than every European city we track combined.

Is 3 days enough for Tokyo?

It covers Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku, Asakusa and Tsukiji at a fast pace, which is what the itinerary here does. It is not enough to add a day trip to Kamakura or Nikko without cutting something. Five days is the point where Tokyo stops feeling rushed.

Which cities save shopping over sightseeing?

Seoul and Bangkok, and only those two in this series. In both, markets and malls collect more savers than monuments do, and in Bangkok the single most-saved place in the city is ICONSIAM, a shopping centre.

When should I avoid Dubai and Bangkok?

Dubai between June and September, when daytime heat makes most outdoor plans unworkable; November to March is the window. Bangkok is hottest in April and wettest from May to October, though the rain usually comes in short afternoon bursts rather than all day.

Why is there no save data for Tashkent?

Fewer than ten of our travelers have saved anything in Tashkent, which is too few to rank honestly. That says something about how little Central Asia appears in travel content and nothing reliable about the city, so we published the itinerary without a ranking.
