Plotline and Wanderlog are two of the most useful travel apps available, but they solve the planning problem from opposite directions. Wanderlog is a comprehensive trip planner: you build a trip, add places by search or, since fall 2026, through a brand-new link and video import, and it helps you organize them into days with route optimization. Plotline is built for social media discovery: you share a TikTok or Instagram Reel and every place gets extracted and mapped automatically. Which one fits you depends almost entirely on where your travel inspiration comes from.
More than 40,000 travelers have used Plotline to map over 3 million places from 800,000-plus social media posts.
What they have in common
Before the differences, it is worth saying that Plotline and Wanderlog share a goal: getting your travel plans out of your head and your screenshots and into something organized and map-based. Both put your places on a map. Both help you think about a trip spatially rather than as a list of bookings. Both are big upgrades over saving places in your Notes app or a sprawling Google Maps list.
If you have been losing travel recommendations in your camera roll, either app is a step forward. The question is which one matches how you actually discover and plan.
Wanderlog: what it does well
Wanderlog has built a strong reputation as a free, full-featured trip planner, and it earns it. Its strengths are on the planning and logistics side:
- Day-by-day itinerary building. Wanderlog is designed around trips and days. You add places, assign them to days, and see the whole trip laid out clearly.
- Route optimization. It reorders the stops in a day to minimize travel time, which is genuinely useful for packed itineraries and road trips.
- Reservations and logistics. Wanderlog can track flights, hotels, and reservations alongside your places, so the whole trip lives in one document.
- Collaboration. You can plan a trip with friends, with everyone adding and editing places.
- Cross-platform. Wanderlog works on iOS, Android, and the web, so you can plan on a laptop and carry it on your phone.
If you are the type who sits down, picks a destination, and methodically builds out a detailed plan, Wanderlog is excellent. It is one of the best tools for turning a known list of places into an organized, optimized trip.
Wanderlog: where it falls short
Wanderlog's limitations show up at the very beginning of the process, when you are gathering places, especially if your inspiration comes from social media.
- Social import is brand new, and it missed places in our test. Wanderlog added import from pasted links in September 2026 and from shared videos in October. When we shared a Lisbon TikTok that names 12 places, it missed 2 and offered to add the other 10 to a trip. Plotline found all 12 in the same video.
- Built around discrete trips. Wanderlog assumes you are planning a specific trip, and its imports go into one. It is less suited to maintaining a running, evergreen library of places you have saved from social media for "someday."

Plotline: what it does well
Plotline starts at the other end of the journey, the moment of discovery, long before there is a trip to put places in.
- Share sheet from any app. See a place on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, a blog, or Google Maps? Tap share, choose Plotline, done. No app switching, no searching.
- Automatic place extraction. Plotline reads the content you share, including video, captions, and article text, and identifies every place mentioned, then geocodes it onto your map automatically.
- Multi-place per post. One video about the best cafes in Lisbon can produce five, eight, or ten pins in a single action.
- Map-first design. The home screen is a map. Every saved place is a color-coded pin, organized into nine categories: eat, brew, sip, explore, vibe, stay, shop, go, and party.
- Collections. Group places by theme or destination, like "Tokyo Ramen Spots" or "Anniversary Trip Ideas," without forcing a rigid trip structure.
- Trending. A live map and ranked list show what other travelers are saving nearby, with saver counts and the community's tip on each place.
- Automatic day-by-day itinerary generation. Pick a destination and dates, set a pace (Chill, Balanced, or Packed) and a few vibes, and Plotline turns your saved places plus AI recommendations into an optimized day-by-day itinerary, up to 14 days, with must-see spots locked in place and the plan sequenced outward from a home base you set, like your hotel.
If most of your travel ideas come from scrolling, Plotline removes the single biggest barrier between inspiration and a real plan, and can carry that plan through to a finished itinerary.
Plotline: where it falls short
Plotline is a newer, more focused app, and that focus has tradeoffs.
- iOS only. Wanderlog has Android and web; Plotline is currently iPhone only.
- Trip planning beyond the first is a Premiere feature. Every Plotline user gets one trip plan free, manual or automatic, whichever they use first, Plotline Premiere unlocks unlimited planning plus Side Quests, its single-day route-optimized spontaneous plan. Wanderlog's planning and collaboration tools are free without that ceiling, so if you are building itinerary after itinerary, Wanderlog's model has less friction.
- Less suited to logistics tracking. If you want flights, hotels, and reservations in one document, Wanderlog does that and Plotline does not.

Can you use both?
For a lot of travelers, yes, and it is a genuinely good setup. Use Plotline as the capture layer: when you are scrolling and a video surfaces three places you need to remember, share it to Plotline and they land on your map instantly, and Plotline can turn those saves into its own day-by-day itinerary when the trip is ready to plan. Some travelers still move their places into Wanderlog to build the plan there instead, especially when they want reservation tracking or need to collaborate with someone on Android.
Plotline handles social discovery and can turn it into a day-by-day plan on its own. Wanderlog adds deeper trip logistics, like reservations, plus cross-platform access. They are complementary far more than they are competitors.
Which should you choose?
A simple framework:
- Most of your places come from TikTok and Instagram. Start with Plotline. It pins every place from each post to one map that grows as you save, with the creator's tip attached, and it found all 12 places in our Lisbon test video, where Wanderlog missed 2.
- You want reservations and logistics tracked alongside your places. Wanderlog keeps flights, hotels, and bookings in the same document as your itinerary; Plotline does not.
- You need Android or web access. Wanderlog, since Plotline is iOS only for now.
- You want one app for the whole journey from saved Reel to finished plan. Plotline now covers this end to end: capture from social media and generate the day-by-day itinerary in the same app. Add Wanderlog alongside it if you also want reservation tracking or need Android or web access.
The bottom line
Neither app is simply better; they are built for different moments. Wanderlog is the right tool when you already know your places and want to turn them into a detailed, route-optimized trip. Plotline is the right tool when your inspiration lives in saved videos and you need it pulled onto a map without typing a single address. If your travel ideas come mostly from social media, that capture step is where Plotline shines, and its own day-by-day itinerary generation can carry the trip the rest of the way, pairing naturally with a planner like Wanderlog when you want reservation tracking or need Android or web access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Plotline free to use?
Plotline is free to download, and every user gets one trip plan free, manual or automatic, whichever you use first, plus place-saving with a daily cap and Collections. Plotline Premiere removes the daily save cap and unlocks unlimited trip planning and Side Quests, the single-day route-optimized plan. Wanderlog's planning and collaboration tools are free without that ceiling, so if you build itinerary after itinerary, Wanderlog has less friction.
Does Plotline work on Android?
Not yet. Plotline is iOS only today. Wanderlog runs on iOS, Android, and the web, so if you need Android or a laptop for planning, Wanderlog is the one that works everywhere right now. Many travelers still use Plotline on iPhone to capture places from TikTok and Instagram, then move to Wanderlog when they need cross-platform access or want to collaborate with someone on Android.
Which app is better if I already know where I'm going and just need a detailed itinerary?
Wanderlog. It's built around discrete trips: add your places, assign them to days, and route optimization reorders stops to cut down on backtracking, with reservations and logistics tracked alongside. Plotline's day-by-day itinerary generation is strongest when it is building from places you already saved from TikTok and Reels, since those saves are already on its map, each with the creator's tip attached.
Can Wanderlog import places from TikTok or Instagram automatically?
Yes, but the feature is brand new. Wanderlog added import from pasted links in September 2026 and from shared videos in October, and it is not reliable yet: when we shared a Lisbon TikTok that names 12 places, it missed 2 and offered to add the other 10 to a trip. Plotline found all 12 in the same video and pinned them to a map that keeps growing as you save, rather than to a single trip, with the creator's tip attached to each place.
Does Plotline track flight and hotel reservations like Wanderlog does?
No. Reservation tracking is one of Wanderlog's real strengths: flights, hotels, and bookings can live in the same document as your itinerary. Plotline does not track reservations. It focuses on capturing places from social media and turning them into a day-by-day plan, so many travelers use Plotline to gather places and Wanderlog alongside it for the logistics layer.
